Graphic User Interfaces (GUI) lijken niet meer wat ze geweest zijn. Al maandenlang wordt er op fora en weblogs geklaagd over Unity van Ubuntu. Ikzelf, samen met vele anderen (voorbeeld), wens de 'GUI' van Facebook de tering. Veel mensen zonder Eerste Leven vinden dat de nieuwe Second Life interface zuigt zuigt zuigt. GUIs op Linux? Haters gonna hate. En nu is het zelfs een topic op Slashdot: Do We Really Hate All New GUIs? Volgens een /.-reaguurder:

If there's one thing we should learn from these ordeals, it's that people claiming to be "UI designers" should be shunned. Every commercial and open source project needs to limit the involvement of these people. They can make icons, but that's where it should end.

GNOME, Firefox, and Windows all had far more usable UIs when actual software developers were in charge of making the decisions. This isn't surprising, though. Software developers are mainly concerned with creating software that works, and that works well. "UI designers", on the other hand, are more interested in creating software that looks "pretty", even if it's damn impossible to use productively. Usability does not come from gradients and curved corners.

Er waart een spook door GUI-land. Misschien is er een nieuwe generatiekloof aan het ontstaan. De oude GUI-gebruikers versus GUI-gebruikers TNG. Zijn ons de mopperende oude mannetjes (m/v)?. Of hebben ons gelijk? Is er een nieuwe generatie GUI aan het ontstaan die gewoon niet klopt?

En welke interfaces vinden jullie zuigen? Komaan! Lucht jullie hartjes maar eens lekker.
